“Prince Java”
My name is PJ (short for Price Java). Welcome to my page. I am a Meyer’s parrot (of the poicephalus parrot family). I joined the Standifird household in August 2006. I was adopted (dare I say purchased) from Bird Crazy in San Diego. The Standifird’s have provided me with a nice home. I love my California Cage Company cage as well as the various outposts they have provided me throughout the house. Here is a bit more information about me:
- My ancestors comes from Central and Eastern Africa (see below). I was born in California.
- I was born in May 2003. I plan to live to about 2033 (maybe even longer if all goes well).
- There is little record of how I spent my youth (and I prefer to keep it that way).
- No one knows if I’m male or female. The only way to know for sure is to do a blood test and I would prefer to avoid giving blood just to reveal my gender (I prefer the mystery). They all assume I’m male but they don’t know for sure.
- Some parrots can be fairly standoffish with strangers. However, I’m fairly social as parrots go. My favorite place in the world is on Steve’s shoulder. However, I am just as likely to find your shoulder comfy as well.
- I love neck rubs (what parrot doesn’t). If I tap your hand with my beak and then bend down my head, this does not mean I’m trying to bite you. It means I’m trying to get you to rub my neck (just be gentle, I’m a little guy).
- I can be rather demanding (I love the attention and can get fussy – read noisy – when I don’t get it). That said, I’m fairly quiet compared to some of my other parrot friends.
- I’m short on words but love to whistle and I’m quite good at imitate human whistles.
- In terms of food, I want whatever the humans are eating (Chewy and I are quite similar on this dimension). My absolute favorite food is pop corn.
I’ve provided some links below to give you more information about life with parrots. We can be demanding at times but make great companions for those interested in taking the time to get to know us. Just keep in mind that we have long lives (some macaws have been known to live to be a hundred years old) and can be rather pesky when we don’t receive the attention we deserve. So, do your homework and be thoughtful before bringing a parrot into your life. Power to my feathered friends. May you all find caring and compassionate companions. Feel free to contact me at pj@standifird.org if you have any questions.
